About Me
Hello there, my name is Natalie and I love doing freehand machine embroidery, here’s a little bit about me.
Generally I work with embroidery hoops as they have a simple way of framing my illustrative animal portraits. My work is ideal for hanging in any room but would look particularly stunning in a playroom or nursery as children love animals, but I know adults do too! That’s why I think hanging them in a home office, crafty studio or living room would also be a stunning addition to anyones art collection!
Early Days
I learnt to do freehand machine embroidery whilst doing a Textile Art A-level at college. I thought that it would be all about making dressing and pattern cutting but boy was I wrong. I really hated doing textiles at first but then I had an break through with using my sewing machine to create textures and words and then… I really loved it! I couldn’t get enough of it! I went in on my breaks and lunches and turned my failing grade into A’s and B’s in all of my modules!
Although I loved textile art, it was my therapy, my everything, I was equally in love with dancing. After completing my a-levels I went onto to do a degree in Dance Studies at the University of Roehampton, London. Whilst at uni I took a very basic sewing machine with me and made simple cushions to make my room look more homely, but generally I spent most of my time dancing and feeling like someone from the cast of Fame.
Since I graduated in 2012 I have worked full time in a few shops and in a call centre (something I was good at but not something I wanted to do forever) and then fell into do more of my embroidery after work, making me realise again how much i needed to express myself through this media. I started my reliving a piece of my a-level work and made a huge butterfly piece and made it into a pillow for my mum and from there I just carried on.
